$40,000 grant for West Wyalong Medical Centre

West Wyalong Medical Centre

The West Wyalong Medical Centre is the first to benefit from Bland Shire Council’s recently created Economic Development Fund.

The Medical Centre will receive a grant of $40,000 from Council, spilt between the Economic Development Fund and Council’s Business Assistance program, towards the major expansion of its facilities in West Wyalong’s Main Street.

The impressive new facilities have also led to the attraction of new medical services to West Wyalong and the wider Bland Shire community, including the appointment of a full-time on site physiotherapist and dietician.

The new facilities have also attracted a visiting podiatrist, physician, gynaecologist and obstetrician, urologist and ultra sound service as well as other specialists to town while a local Cancer Support Group (in conjunction with West Wyalong Can Assist), Nutrition Group and Patient Advisory Group have also recently been established.

Combined with the outstanding medical services also offered at the Bland Medical Centre and the Tristar Medical Centre, West Wyalong patients can now access a wide range of medical care and services without the huge cost and inconvenience of leaving town.

The number and availability of medical professionals and services in the Bland Shire has improved dramatically in recent years after being identified by the local community as the top priority when Council conducted a community wide survey in 2011.

“Council has, for many years, had a strong commitment to supporting the Medical Practices in our Shire,” Bland Shire Mayor, Neil Pokoney said.

“We are greatly impressed by this development and very excited about the provision of so many new health services to our community.

“We wish the Doctors the very best for the future and applaud them for making such a significant investment in our community.

“I know people are now returning to West Wyalong for their medical needs. I am also aware that people are travelling from Temora and Lake Cargelligo to this centre which is bringing increased economic activity to our town.”

The Economic Development Fund was established by Council in 2014 to help create new investment, industry and employment opportunities to the Bland Shire.

Almost half of the rates paid for the Cowal gold mine is poured into the Economic Development Fund as part of a long term Council strategy to help the Bland Shire plan for, absorb and prosper past the eventual  closure of the mine and/or future challenges faced by the community as a result of changes to the agriculture industry.

The range of medical services and facilities now available in West Wyalong will not only drive immediate economic growth but will also assist Council to attract new business and industry to the Bland Shire in the future by making the area a more attractive place to live.
