Australia’s Cyber Cop to present online safety workshop for parents

Australia’s leading cyber safety expert Susan Mclean will conduct a workshop for parents and carers in West Wyalong later this month.

A community safety initiative of Bland Shire Council, the Cyber Safety workshop for Parents will be held at the West Wyalong Bowling Club at 6.30pm on Thursday 21 June to educate parents about the various apps, games, sites and live streams, trends and behaviours in cyberspace and what to look out for to help protect their children.

A former Victorian police officer, Ms Mclean is now recognised as Australia’s own “cyber cop” who is a sought after speaker right across the country.

She regularly appears on television as the leading expert in her field and consults for elite sporting bodies including the AFL and Cricket Australia as well as advising the State and Federal Government where she currently serves as a member of the Australian Government’s Cybersafety Working Group.

Ms Mclean last month released a revised version of her best-selling book “Sexts, Texts and Selfies” which is described as the definitive guide for parents, teachers and carers to help children stay safe online.

Ms Mclean promises to deliver a “no nonsense” approach when she talks to parents and carers in West Wyalong about what modern children are doing online, what many of the dangers are and how they can monitor their child’s behaviour.

Some of the topics she will confront and cover will include -

  • Snapchat, Facebook and social media. What is Kik, Misical.ly, Instagram, Omegle, Melon and Yubo?
  • Cyberbullying
  • Online grooming
  • Sexting
  • Internet and gaming addiction and/or excessive use

A question and answer session will follow for parents to ask specific questions. Facilitated by Bland Shire Council, the cyber safety workshop is free of charge with no bookings required.
