Barrick Cowal to fund Lake Cowal Road improvements

The Barrick Cowal Gold Mine and Bland Shire Council have had another partnership success with an agreement reached for major upgrade works on the Lake Cowal Road.

Council’s General Manager, Ray Smith said the agreement is a direct result of the MOU entered into by Bland, Forbes and Lachlan Councils with Barrick for the disbursement of up to $150,000.00 per year by Barrick to the three councils based on safety and improvement priorities on roads in the vicinity of the mine.

“Road Safety Audits were undertaken by each of the councils and the highest priority from all three audits was for major works on sections of the Lake Cowal Road.”

“After a very congenial meeting with representatives of the three councils and Barrick, it was unanimously agreed to spend the bulk of the 2013 and 2014 funds on this road. The remaining funds from the will be disbursed amongst Forbes and Lachlan Councils.”

The estimated cost of works within the Bland Shire is $260,000.00 and “this is a very positive outcome for the residents in this area as well as the many mining staff that have to travel this road for access to the mine,” said Mr Smith.

Works should commence on the road within the next 2-3 weeks.
