Big Heart Appeal

Members of the Bland Shire community are being asked to show how big their hearts are by supporting the Heart Foundation's 2013 Big Heart Appeal during September.

Heart Foundation NSW - Chief Executive, Kerry Doyle said almost 95 per cent of the Heart Foundation's work is funded through the generosity of individual Australians.

"Each year, donations received from the community help the Heart Foundation to fund a record number of life-saving research projects and, importantly, help us continue our vital health education programs that are designed to lower the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in our community and lower the rate of recurrence and hospital admission," Ms Doyle said.

CVD is NSW's most expensive disease group and a leading cause of avoidable hospitalisation.

"Whilst significant advances have been made, with deaths rates from heart attack dropping by 35 per cent between 2001 and 2011, the high survival rates mean more people are living with heart disease after their heart attack," Ms Doyle said.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in NSW and a major cause of disability. It is the number one killer of women, taking three times as many lives as breast cancer.

Bland Shire Council is urging members of the community to dig deep and make a generous donation when a Heart Foundation volunteer knocks on their door during September.

Most of the Heart Foundation's funding comes from donations from the public and is essential to helping
reduce the suffering and death caused by heart disease in Australia.

The Heart Foundation is an independent charity that funds world class research, supports health professionals and promotes health in the community.
