Clean Up Australia Day a huge success

Bland Shire Council Director of Community and Development Services, Adele Casey, has declared Clean Up Australia Day in the Bland Shire as an overwhelming success.

Council opened each of its tips for free to celebrate Clean Up Australia Day last Sunday and the new initiative attracted an unprecedented community response.

Vehicles lined the road leading into the West Wyalong landfill throughout the day with tonnes of rubbish cleaned out of homes, yards and local neighbourhoods.

A record 190 vehicles took advantage of the new Council initiative in West Wyalong alone while huge volumes of traffic were reported throughout the day at the village tips, in particular Ungarie and Barmedman.

A number of people made use of the offer by throwing away old and broken furniture  while Clean Up Australia Day was also a popular time for mowing and gardening throughout the community with huge volumes of green waste dumped.

Mrs Casey was pleased to see the community embrace the trial Clean Up Australia Day concept.

“The concept was designed to impact on and benefit the most number of people possible in our Shire and Council could not be happier with the response,” she said.

“The Council resources usually dedicated to coordinating a small group of people to clean up a small area in West Wyalong were reallocated with the objective of reaching and benefiting a larger number of residents across the entire Shire.

“By encouraging people to get rid of rubbish or clutter that may have been lying around their homes, yards or neighbourhoods the program also delivers a number of environmental benefits to the Shire.”
