DA lodged for Sports Stadium refurbishment

The Facility Design Group this week lodged a development application for the refurbishment of the West Wyalong Sports Stadium.

The application, which was also presented to Tuesday night’s meeting of the Sports Stadium Refurbishment Steering Committee, includes the extension and refurbishment of the facility to incorporate two full sized courts and a range of associated improvements in accordance with the resolution of Bland Shire Council on 16 June.

It will allow the Facility Design Group, which was engaged by Council earlier this year to manage the Sports Stadium refurbishment project within a project cap of $2 million, to finalise documentation calling for expressions of interest for the construction phase of the project to commence after development approval is received.

The lodgment of the development application will allow the project to move forward while Council awaits the outcome of a National Stronger Region Funds grant application for additional works to the precinct, including construction of a new third full sized basketball court adjacent to the existing facility.

Preliminary plans have already been designed for the additional works, which will be included in a separate development application and costed according to the information received in the expression of interest and tender process if the grant is successful or additional funds become available.

With the development application lodged and the expression of interest process about to commence, Bland Shire Council General Manager, Ray Smith will recommend to Council that the committee be wound up having fulfilled its primary roles and objectives.

Mr Smith said Council will continue to engage and consult with users of the facility through the Sports Stadium management committee and is also committed to keeping the wider community informed as the project progresses.
