Food for Fines and Christmas Giving Tree

The Bland Shire library Food for Fines program has assisted the community for the last 10 years and as the library prepares to launch the 2013 appeal the need has never been greater.

Conducted in partnership with the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul, the Food for Fines program has boosted individuals and families through multiple seasons of drought and plenty more unforseen challenges but the demand this Christmas is expected to hit an all-time peak as the reality of an increased cost of living takes a grip.

When struggling to pay the bills and keep their power connected, one of the first things many people give up is food items. The Food for Fines program aims to ensure all residents of the Bland Shire and their families can fill their stomachs and boost their health over Christmas.

Under the hugely successful program, the library will wipe the outstanding fines of any members who donate to the Food for Fines Appeal from November 4 up until Monday, December 16 after which the food items will be presented to representatives of the Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul for distribution.

This year the library is requesting that the community donates Christmas food as well as other Christmas treats. This will ensure that everyone in the community truly appreciates the Christmas season.

“The contributions made by library clients in the past have been highly valued and greatly appreciated,” Council’s Manager of Library and Children’s Services, Joanne Russo said.

“The Food for Fines campaign allows members of the community to bring in non perishable food items and goods, place them into the hampers and in return library staff will remove any outstanding library fees.”

This year the library will also be supporting a Christmas giving tree. The library is requesting that community members donate non-perishable gifts for distribution to adults, teens, children or babies. Gifts received will be given to St Vincent De Paul and the Salvation Army for distribution to the needy.

The Bland Shire Library is located in Shire Street, West Wyalong.
