Half Day Public Holiday for West Wyalong Show

The New South Wales Government has declared a half day public holiday for this year’s West Wyalong Show.

Minister for Industrial Relations, Mike Baird, made the declaration on Friday afternoon to end a nervous wait for West Wyalong Show Society officials.

The holiday has been declared from 12 noon on Wednesday, September 4 and applies to the town improvement districts of West Wyalong, Wyalong and Tallimba.

Bland Shire Council formally applied to the State Government for the half day holiday late last year.

As part of the application process, Council undertook an extensive community consultation process. The community was asked to indicate a preference for a half day public holiday or local event day for the show.

An online survey conducted by Council showed overwhelming support for a half day public holiday as requested by the Show Society and subsequently supported by Council at its November monthly meeting.

West Wyalong Show Society secretary Diane Redman has welcomed the announcement.

“We are stoked to hear this news. To us it is confirmation that the community has faith in the Show Society committee to continue this unique event, that it should continue for future generations and will enable the Show Society to develop its relationship with the business houses of our community,” Mrs Redman said.
