History Week lecture - shifting the rural gaze

Doctor Lawrence Bamblett will share the history and stories of a tiny rural community in central NSW at a special community lecture at the Bland Shire Council Chambers on September 11 to celebrate History Week,

Drawing on his recently published book, Dr Bamblett brings an astonishing history of a remarkable place to light which will challenge many expectations.

Using oral testimony, historic photographs and contemporary accounts, the typical picture of an Australian rural community may be changed as Dr Bamblett shifts the gaze from that of an outsider to that from within.

This talk will tell about both a history of place and its people and show that history itself changes depending on the vantage point of both the historian and their audience.

Dr Bamblett's talk will reveal a part of Australian history too often ignored, while interrogating our historical assumptions.

The talk is presented as part of the Speaker Connect program, a partnership between the History Council of NSW and the Royal Australian Historical Society and supported by Your Community Heritage, and is being run in conjunction with the Bland Shire library.

The talk will take place in the Chambers at 6 Shire Street, West Wyalong, between 2pm and 3pm with the library to provide a free afternoon tea. Bookings are essential by phoning the library on 69790272 or email

The West Wyalong Event is part of the History Council of New South Wales History Week 2013 celebrations.
