Local Walking Groups set to take off

Bland Shire Council is set to launch a new community health and wellbeing initiative in conjunction with the Heart Foundation.

Heart Foundation Walking Groups will commence in West Wyalong with trial walks set down for next Thursday, February 20 and Thursday, February 27.

Interested participants are asked to meet at the walking track outside the West Wyalong Saleyards at 9.30am. Everyone is encouraged to take the first step towards fun and fitness by joining in the trial walks. Participants are encouraged to walk at their own pace and stick to a distance that suits them.

Heart Foundation Walking groups offer a range of health, fitness and social benefits, including-

  • An easy and accessible way to stay physically active
  • A fun and safe way to be healthy
  • Social contact and community spirit
  • A program that is safe for all ages and abilities
  • Regular newsletters, which include health information, and
  • Encouragement and incentives to keep walking

Heart Foundation walking groups can be of any size while walks can be held at various times, days, lengths and levels. Walkers will make new friends and improve your health at the same time.

“Bland Shire Council is delighted to team with the Heart Foundation to offer such a worthwhile health and wellbeing program for the community,” Council’s Director of Corporate, Community and Development Services, Adele Casey said.

“It is a worthwhile program which can be flexible to the needs of the community.”

People interested in becoming involved in the Heart Foundation Walking Group program are strongly encouraged to attend the trial walks. A free morning tea will be held at Café Peckish following the second trial walk on February 27.
