Waste collection moves into the 21st Century

Last modified: June 1, 2009 - 4:31 PM

Media Release 1 June 2009

Bland Shire Council is beginning to roll out the new "nature green" waste bins used for kerbside waste collection. Weethalle, Barmedman and Ungarie have all received the new waste bins over past weekends with bins being delivered efficiently and accurately. The proficiency of the bin delivery is thanks to a GPS bin delivery system developed by the Geospatial Alliance Project (GAP) together with Bland Shire Council.

As the bins are being delivered, Council staff are using a GPS enabled, palm size computer (PDA) that contains the bin delivery software. As each bin is delivered to your home or business it is marked off on the PDA device. This is then downloaded onto the Bland Shire Computer system which marks the bin as being delivered to the correct household or business and is automatically registered to that land's rates notice. This bin delivery system ensures each household and business gets the correct amount of bins. More importantly, the system allows all bins in the Shire to be recorded so Council can ensure the rates notices are billed correctly.

The PDA device is directly linked to the "Bin Manager" database (specifically designed for Bland Shire Council) which helps create a more structured and efficient approach to waste collection and rates billing. Michael Troth from GAP said "the bin manager system is proving to be very worthwhile. The PDA allows Council staff to quickly mark the bin as it is delivered and move to the next house rather then deal with a bundle of paper." Development Services have been working very closely with GAP to implement this cutting edge technology and ensure it makes for a more efficient result when problems arise with resident's bins.

Each garbage bin is numbered so if a one is found, the number can be directly linked to the household or business it belongs to, thanks to the bin manager database. It ensures that the number of bins in the Bland Shire is accurate and people are only paying for their services and not footing the bills of others.
