Bald Archy Comes to TownLast modified: June 3, 2009 - 4:12 PM
Media Release 3 June 2009 Bland Shire Council, together with the Regional Youth Development Working Party will be hosting the Bald Archy Exhibition at the Masonic Hall from the 3rd to 19th July 2009. "Opening Night on Friday 3rd of July will see the launch of a most unique art exhibition, never before seen in West Wyalong" said Bland Shire Council's Youth Development Officer, Michele Carnegie. "This presents a wonderful way for the whole community to engage in a youth led event". The Bald Archy Prize was founded in 1994 in a small village outside Gundagai, by experienced arts administrator and successful theatre director, Peter Batey OAM. Although created in the spirit of good fun , the Bald Archy Prize has become an icon, albeit an eccentric one, on the Australian art calendar, calling as it does for irreverent comic and satirical larrikin images of well-known Australians. Pride of place in the 2009 Bald Archy Prize touring exhibition will be given to a boldly stated, wryly observed depiction of the legendary Australian racing celebrity, Bart Cummings, entitled "Old Owl Eyes Is Back", by Newcastle artist, James Brennan, whose Bald Archy winning entry was inspired by Cummings' Melbourne Cup win last year. Forty seven comic portraits are displayed in this year's show, as always an entertaining array of well-known Australians prominent in the arts, politics, sport, the media and other areas, including cricketer Andrew Symonds, photographer Bill Henson, actors Heath Ledger, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard and Julie Bishop (as two Federal Felines), Belinda Neal, Peter Garrett, Andrew Denton, footballers Ron Barassi, Barry Hall, Ben Cousins, and radio comics Hamish & Andy, to name but a few, "General opinion seems to be that this is one of the best ever shows." says Founder/Director of the Archys, Peter Batey OAM. "The exhibition has already been seen in Sydney, Coffs Harbour, Wagga , Deniliquin and Canberra, where it previewed as one of the headline attractions of the big annual National Multicultural Festival, a definite feather in the Bald Archys' cap, and soon to be at West Wyalong where many happy viewers will flood the transformed Masonic Hall to enjoy the brilliant satire that has flowed from the brushes of artists from across Australia." Following the West Wyalong showing, the exhibition will be seen in Melbourne, Adelaide and Bowral. Overall, tens of thousands of happy art enthusiasts will get to enjoy this very irreverent and fun entertainment. Contact details |
