New Workshops Help Council Plan for Climate ChangeLast modified: October 8, 2009 - 8:32 AM
Media Release 8 October 2009 Bland Shire Council is one of four councils in NSW trialing a new workshop package that will help Local Government minimise its impact on, and response to climate change. Coordinated by the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW (LGSA) and funded by the NSW Environmental Trust, the workshop package helps councils create a local climate change action plan. Bland Shire's plan will include strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from council's operations, and preparing council and the community for the likely impacts of climate change. President of the President of the Shires Association Cr Bruce Miller says adequate planning is crucial to ensure local councils take the necessary steps now to prepare for climate change. "The workshops and subsequent planning will help Bland Shire prioritise and implement effective strategies to protect the local environment, people and their lifestyles in a changing climate" he said. "Climate change will affect most, if not all, of council's operations and decisions. "Our aim is to have all NSW councils consider climate change impacts in every decision they make - whether it's developing a new road base for longer lasting roads, or purchasing local products and subsequently supporting local businesses and jobs." Bland Shire Council is already acting on climate change and has created a Waste Management Strategy and a Storm Water Catchment Management Scheme. Mayor Tony Lord says the community also has an important role to play in preparing for, and reducing the magnitude of climate change. "Councils are lucky to have a close and unique relationship with their communities and we'll use this to encourage residents to act on climate change," said Mayor Lord "Bland Shire is serious about its obligation to address climate change, and taking part in the LGSA workshop trials affirms this. "It is hoped that the workshops will help in the promotion of climate change. Plans and solutions will be sought to assist our farming community cope with the changing climate as it severely impacts on this industry. "We hope to work closely with our neighbouring councils to pass on what we've learnt and encourage them to also prepare a local climate change action plan and to also work with us on a regional scale."
