Low Numbers On Clean Up Australia Day

Media Release 13 March 2008

17 dedicated locals turned out to collect over 70 bags of rubbish in the annual Clean Up Australia day event held in West Wyalong on Sunday  the 2nd of March.

The early Sunday morning start and the smell of wafting pancakes did little to deter the volunteers who assembled at 8.00am in Lions Park for registration.

Volunteers were dispatched with bags and gloves (supplied by Barrick and Ag-N-Vet) to the Barmedman Highway, Mid-Western Highway or the Newell which were all registered sites in a bus provided by Kelly's Coaches.

A  Bland Shire Council truck manned by council staff delivered the loads of rubbish to the tip. Participants commented on the large number of drink containers, food wrappers and tyre remains that they picked up, but also on some more unique items including cement mixing machinery, road signs, large birds nests and adult videos.

Volunteers were rewarded for their cleaning efforts on their return, with a free barbeque cooked by the West Wyalong Lions Club. Food and drinks were supplied by Food Services Central, Gary Clements and the West Wyalong S&C Club.

Site organiser Maggie Westbrook was pleased with the outcome of the day considering the small number of volunteers. "The people who participated in the clean up worked very hard and collected significant amounts of rubbish, however, numbers were down on last year by over 50 people, which is a real shame," said Council's Community Relations Officer Maggie Westbrook.

"The time and effort involved in organising any community event is immense. In order for us to ensure a situation where every community event in the town has the best opportunity for success, it is important that we all work together and communicate with one another," concluded Ms Westbrook.

The date for Clean Up Australia Day 2009 will be Sunday 1 March.
