HSC Study Without Stress Course

Media Release 13 March 2008

Bland Shire Council, in partnership with the West Wyalong High School and the West Wyalong Rotary Club will be offering a one day session - "HSC Study Without Stress" on Friday 14 March.

This essential workshop has been made avaliable to all year 12 students from West Wyalong High School and Ungarie Central School through the generous financial contributions of the partnering organisations.

The content of the session will target the difficulties many students have in coping with HSC stress and will teach skills to manage the stress of an increased workload and pressure for performance. The session will cover the following areas:

Understanding Stress

Stress Management

Challenging Unhelpful Thinking Styles

Managing High Workloads

Dealing with Exam Anxiety

Managing Procrastination

Keeping Perfectionism Under Control

Problem Solving

Creating a Study-Life Balance

Dr Zoya Jamshidi, from the Macquarie University Anxiety Clinic will be the facilitator for the day. Dr Jamshidi holds an Honours degree in Psychology from University of Sydney as well as a Doctorate degree in Counselling Psychology from Macquarie University. Her work at the Anxiety Clinic centres around identification and management of anxiety and stress in the context of the HSC.

A session for parents is being offered from 2 to 3pm, where Dr Jamshidi will discuss how parents can best support their child through this challenging time.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our HSC students and their parents/carers, as the Macquarie University rarely offer such a course outside of Metropolitan areas, " said Michele Carnegie, Bland Shire Council's Youth Development Officer.

"The day will offer a balanced mix of interactive whole group sessions and practical activities. Skills developed will not only be invaluable now, they will be able to be applied to every day life beyond the HSC, concluded Michele."
