Local Sportswomen Take the Lead (or Lead the Way)

Media Release 26 March 2008

Three local sportswomen, Rebecca Pettit, Bonnie Quade and Cate Smith, were sponsored by Bland Shire Council to attend the Cootamundra Sports Leadership Camp recently. The weekend offered an action packed and highly rewarding range of activities.

Leadership skills were tested through a series of group challenges. For example, making a raft out of noodles, floats, tyres, yoga mats, ropes and milk bottles.  "This would have been one of the hardest tasks faced over the weekend," said Cate Smith, "getting the whole team across the pool without the raft falling apart was a huge challenge".  Other challenges included constructing a catapult out of sticks, rubber bands, string and newspaper from which an egg needed to be launched 5 metres without breaking.

A strong emphasis was placed on disability support with the aim of increasing awareness of the necessity for access to all people in the community.  Participants developed skills in a range of access sports such as "life ball" and disabled volleyball. A representative from wheelchair basketball spoke on the lifelong impact of car accidents in P plate drivers, followed by a game of wheelchair basketball.

"Experiencing activities rather than hearing or reading about them, increases empathy and awareness of limitations associated with people who have disabilities", said Michele Carnegie, Bland Shire Council Youth Development Officer.

Participants were particularly impressed by the media session presented by Prime News Reader, Doug Hogan.  Doug developed skills in how to use the media to your advantage in raising the profile of local sport in country towns.  He highlighted the benefits this brings to sponsors who are more likely to continue their sponsorship with increased media exposure.

"The weekend developed my goal setting techniques as well as increasing my confidence in my coaching ability.  My experience has reconfirmed my career choice, " said Year 12 student Rebecca Pettit.

"People became aware of their abilities when put in challenging situations," added Cate Smith.

For year 11 student Bonnie Quade, the camp gave her a whole new perspective on what is achievable.  "Everything is possible if you break it down into small tasks. I am so grateful for having my mobility which gives me the ability to achieve my goals able bodied."

"I congratulate Cate, Rebecca and Bonnie for applying for sponsorship for this camp and hope that the clear advantages gained encourage others to put their hand up when opportunities are offered," said Michele Carnegie.

At the end of the weekend, Cate Smith was named "Leaders Leader"  by the Cootamundra Sports Leadership Management Team who have offered her the opportunity to attend the Baulkham Hills Leadership Camp in Sydney in September.
