Bland Shire Celebrates Youth Week 2008

Media Release 3 June 2008

Over 387 young people from the Bland Shire participated in Youth Week activities.  From global issues relating to climate change to providing an opportunity to voice issues of concern, our youth community were presented with a broad range of opportunities by Bland Shire Council during Youth Week.

Year 7 students from West Wyalong High School and years 7 to 10 from St Mary's and Ungarie Central School took full advantage of resources available at the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre, when they attended a one day session called "Unite For Climate Change".  "Students examined nature's powerful response to climate change and identified ways individuals can change their day to day practices and slow the effects of global warming," said Michele Carnegie, Bland Shire Council's Youth Development Officer.  Students gained a greater appreciation of an environment worth saving through visiting the LCCC Lookout and identifying important aspects of the local area including kangaroo and wombat prints.

Tropfest Jnr Film Festival finalists were screened at the Shire Chambers.  Some of the students had previously experienced short film making when they participated in the Bland Shire Council sponsored program "In The Bin".  "Viewing Tropfest gave participants the opportunity to think about possible themes and techniques they could use when making their own films," said Michele Carnegie. Participants were strongly encouraged to think about making an entry into next year's film festival.  A number of students have already responded to the idea.

Another highlight of Youth Week was the launch of the Regional Youth Development Working Party.  The formation of the Working Party aims to give youth in our community a forum in which they can express ideas, views and raise issues of concern.  It will also be a key representative community group under which funding applications can be made for youth projects and possible infrastructure.  The Working Party comprises youth workers, Council staff and a highly dynamic mix of representatives from towns and villages in our Shire.  "One of the primary outcomes of the day was to identify the strengths and opportunities that already exist in our Shire as well as the areas that need to be improved and developed", said Michele.  From this process a Bland Shire Youth DNA will be developed, covering the following areas: Social/Cultural; Economic; Environment; Resources/ Infrastructure; and Health.  The wider youth community has since been given the opportunity to contribute to this process.

The extensive range of opportunities offered during Youth Week was made possible by the generous contributions made by Bland Shire Council, Barrick Australia Pty Ltd, Arrive Alive and National Youth Week 2008.

"Our young people are to be congratulated on the way they embraced all opportunities offered and as community members we should be very proud of our youth community.  Our future is in capable hands!" concluded Michele Carnegie.
