Bland Shire Sponsors Hip Hop

Media Release 4 June 2008

Local youth (and young at heart), can learn from the best in hip hop/contemporary dance thanks to the generosity of Bland Shire Council and instructor Lauren Stapff, with classes on offer from 4.30 pm on Wednesday evenings at the West Wyalong Service and Citizens Club.

Bland Shire Councils Youth Development Officer, Michele Carnegie, supported the idea to offer regular classes after receiving an overwhelming response to one day programs offered as part of school holiday activity programs. Michele said that the classes are a great opportunity for young people to participate in this popular style of dance as well as enjoying the fun, social aspect of being part of a dance group.

"There was an overwhelming response from the initial registration session and there are limited spaces available for new dancers," added Michele.

Council are urging any interested dancers to please come along to the second registration night at the appropriate time on Wednesday 11th June. Dancers of both genders are welcome.

  • 4.30pm to 5.15pm for Juniors (8-10)
  • 5.15pm to 6.00pm for Intermediates (11-14)
  • 6.00pm to 6.45pm for Advanced (15+)
  • 6.45pm to 7.30 for Open classes (no concert)

Initially dancers will learn warm-up techniques including stretching exercises designed to promote safety and eliminate risk of injury while dancing. The warm up will be followed by moves taught in a step-by-step progression beginning with simple moves to help establish balance, increase flexibility, improve rhythm and build coordination and building up to more advanced techniques including choreographed routines that will be performed in an end of year concert.

" Dancing will help to improve your inner strength as well as help with balance and posture, it is also good at burning off those unwanted calories in an enjoyable environment," said instructor Lauren Stapff.

The classes will be held every Wednesday and are free until the 1st July. From this date there will be a $5.00 weekly fee that is payable at the beginning of the term in one sum. The fee covers room hire, maintenance, and any incidentals and will also contribute towards the cost of fabric for costumes and props for the end of year concert.

Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement, tights or exercise cloths are ideal, other dress requirements are sports shoes or bare feet, hair off face and no big jewellery or watches.
