Regional and Local Infrastructure

Last modified: December 15, 2008 - 12:12 AM

Media Release- December 15

The Council has received an allocation of $506 000 in the $250 million allocation from Federal Government for Local and Regional Infrastructure. The Federal Government has used an objective, transparent and accountable process based on data collected by the State and Local Government Grants Commission applied through the Financial Assistance Grants.

Under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RLCIP) the funding can be spent to improve:

  • Social and cultural infrastructure
  • Recreational facilities
  • Tourism infrastructure
  • Children, youth and seniors facilities
  • Access facilities
  • Environmental initiatives

At the Council meeting on Tuesday the 9th December, Council elected to spend the money in the following ways,

  • $125 000 for the relocation of the Museum to the Wyalong Courthouse
  • $281 000 to be spent on  footpaths and walkways including West Wyalong and Wyalong
  • $100 000 to assist in the development of Ungarie Swimming Pool

These three issues have been discussed in Council meetings and by the public at length. The Ungarie Swimming Pool was originally to receive $75 000 and the upgrade of the footpaths were allocated $306 000 but council reassigned $25 000 to the Ungarie Swimming Pool to increase that total to $100 000.

These projects must be completed by December 2009, as specified by RLCIP, to be eligible to receive the grant. Work is progressing towards complying with this requirement.
