Australia Day Ambassador- A True Community ChampionLast modified: December 16, 2008 - 4:15 PM
Media Release- December 16 Mary McLaren will be the Bland Shire Council's Australia Day Ambassador for 2009. The Ambassador program will allow Ms McLaren to visit West Wyalong and some surrounding villages on Australia Day and share with the community, stories of Hope, Courage and Inspiration. Mary is from Port Macquarie and has worked tirelessly over the past 21 years to raise money for the Cancer Council and other charitable organisations. She founded the Peter McLaren Foundation in memory of her late husband and also supports those who need financial help for accommodation and travel to metropolitan hospitals. Mary was an integral part in the establishment of Blue Gum Lodge at Royal North Shore hospital which provides support for cancer patients who are away from home for treatment. Many local residents would be able to understand the importance of having a home away from home when receiving such vital care. Mary also has a lot to do with young people through her involvement in the PCYC and Girl Guides. Her aim is to teach youth to understand how to help those who are less fortunate then themselves and she encourages them to become better citizens by getting involved in community events. With a variety of charitable work amongst all age groups to her credit, Mary has led an inspirational and diverse life. The Bland Shire is very fortunate to have received such a knowledgeable and motivating Ambassador. Bland Shire's General Manager, Phil Marshall, said "We are very privileged to have such a wonderful Ambassador. The community will benefit from listening to and meeting such a vibrant and accomplished individual." Other activities are currently being organised in West Wyalong and throughout the Shire and a program of events will be announced in early January.
