GP Super Clinic in The Bland Shire

Last modified: February 2, 2009 - 12:00 AM

Media Release- 2 Fefbruary 2009

The Federal Government has offered $1 million for the development of a GP Super Clinic in the Riverina. GP super clinics will allow new facilities and sites of excellence in primary care service delivery and health professional education and training to be established in local communities.

There are 31 locations that are eligible to apply for funding across Australia. Each application for funding processes will be tailored for the locality, taking account of the specific circumstances of that community and the outcomes of local community consultations.

West Wyalong has shown keen interest in the venture with a very positive meeting held in the Bland Shire Council Library on the 29th of January. Representatives from the local Hospital, Community Health Centre and both local practices were present at the meeting to discuss options for the future of health in the Bland Shire and the implications of such a project. The meeting was also attended by five Councillors that were keen to understand the process and purpose of the new GP Super Clinic.

The outcome of the meeting decided that a committee will need to be assembled for further discussion in regard to the GP Super Clinic. This committee will be made up of community members and other stake holders. Expressions of interest have been invited from community members to join the committee. Interest in joining the Committee will close on Monday the 9th of February, 2009. The first meeting will be held in approximately two weeks to begin discussing the application process for a GP Super Clinic in West Wyalong. It is expected that the invitation to apply for the super clinic will be available in approximately six weeks.

The Bland Shire Council is committed to exploring all avenues of health care and it's availability to residents.
