Seniors Week 2013

A short film festival, bus trip to Junee and awards luncheon are just some of the exciting activities planned for Seniors Week in the Bland Shire.

A full week of activities and entertainment is lined up between March 16 and March 24 to celebrate and honour our seniors.

Activities commence with the popular Lions Club bus trip on Saturday, March 16.

The always cheery Lloyd Doel and his band of merry men will transport a bus load of seniors to Junee for the day.

Courtesy of sponsorship from Bland Shire Council, the bus trip is free of charge and seniors can book their place by phoning Lloyd Doel on 6972 0359 by Thursday, March 14. The bus departs the Bernardi’s Supa IGA car park at 8am.

The Bland Shire library has a number of engaging Seniors Week activities planned commencing with Knit and Natter on Tuesday, March 19. The session starts at 2pm with beginner and advanced knitters welcome.

The library will launch the Ancestry Family History website at 10.30am on Wednesday, March 20 which will assist local residents to discover their family history. Meanwhile, children attending Storytime in the library at 10am on Thursday, March 21 are being encouraged to bring along a grandparent or special older person.

One of the features of the week will be the screening of the Young at Heart Seniors Film Festival at the West Wyalong Services and Citizens Club auditorium commencing at 10.30am on Wednesday, March 20.

Those in attendance will view the six 2013 NSW finalist short films featuring actors over 60. Entry is $5 which includes morning tea.

The West Wyalong Men’s Shed will hold an open day on Friday, March 22 between 9am and noon.

Interested persons are encouraged to visit the shed at 123 Railway Road to inspect the facilities and chat to the members. For further enquiries people can phone John Mitchell on 6972 4221.

The highlight of Seniors Week for many will be the annual Seniors Week luncheon and awards at the West Wyalong Services and Citizens Club on Sunday, March 24.

Entertainment will be provided by Peter Coad and the Coad Sisters with seating from 11.30am for the meal to be served at midday.

Courtesy of Bland Shire Council, the luncheon is free to all seniors but places are limited. People can book their seat by phoning Council’s Community care co-ordinator by Friday, March 15.
