Sports Stadium refurbishment update

The West Wyalong Sports Stadium refurbishment took a significant step forward on Tuesday night when Bland Shire Council formally resolved to call for tenders for construction.

After six expressions of interest were received for the provision of construction services, Council will invite the five suitable applicants to submit a formal tender for consideration by Council at its scheduled monthly meeting on 15 March.

At the request of the Sports Stadium Committee, Council will delay the commencement of construction until 1 June.

The committee lodged a written request asking for the stadium to remain available for use until the end of May and Council has agreed to the request in a concerted effort to minimise the disruption of the refurbishment on users.

Due to increased costs associated with the provision of necessary fire safety requirements, Council has been forced to remove the proposed multipurpose room from the scope of works and a revised development application is being prepared incorporating the deletion of the multipurpose room and subsequent additional car parking.

Recent testing revealed a lack of sufficient head pressure in the reticulated water system for the refurbishment to meet Building Code of Australia standards and Goldenfields Water has advised that they cannot guarantee that the proposed main extension and hydrant will be able to supply adequate pressure and flow requirements for firefighting purposes.

With the cost of providing onsite water storage facilities, including pumps, estimated at $100,000, Council is currently investigating alternative options including utilising existing water storage tanks in the vicinity of the area.

Meanwhile, Council’s application under the National Stronger Regions Fund for $2 million to extend the refurbishment to include an additional court/s was unsuccessful.
