Upgrade to White Tank Lane and car park

Pedestrian access and safety, general traffic flow and the number of parking spaces will all be increased as part of an upgrade to White Tank Lane and the community car park adjacent to the Bernardi’s Supa IGA supermarket.

Bland Shire Council commenced work on the upgrade on Wednesday (January 29) to prepare the site for construction.  Once completed, the project will incorporate approximately 12 additional parking bays, two new footpaths providing access to the supermarket and a designated loading zone.

Vehicular access to the car park from Barnado Street and White Tank Lane will be closed to create a “u shaped” traffic flow with single points of entry and exit from Church Street. Similar layouts have operated effectively in other areas, including the Woolworths supermarket car park in Temora.

The former entrances from Barnado Street and White Lank Lane will be transformed into additional parking areas.

New footpaths will be installed between the middle parking bays and on the car park side of White Lank Lane. The footpaths will measure two-and-a-half metres in width and provide improved pedestrian access and safety to and from the store.

At the request of the supermarket owners a pedestrian crossing will also be installed linking the middle footpath to the store entrance.

As part of the upgrade, Council also plans to resheet the entire car park surface and undertake works to improve drainage – reducing inconvenience to the community during and soon after any significant rain event.

Meanwhile, a specific loading zone will be created in White Tank Lane with the remainder to remain open to one way traffic at a reduced speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour.

Council has consulted with the supermarket owners and surround businesses and received strong support for the project.

Pending weather conditions and other external factors, Council hopes to have the project completed by early March.
