West Wyalong to host Australian Town Crier Championships

Bland Shire Council has partnered with Evolution Mining to host the 26th Annual National Town Crier Championships in West Wyalong in September.

The Bland Shire will roar to life when the finest, loudest and proudest Town Criers from across the country, led and hosted by the Bland Shire’s own bellman Kyle Sturgess, converge on West Wyalong from 4-7 September.

With a theme of “Hearts of Gold”, the competition sets out to capture the spirit and characteristics of the Bland Shire community while also recognising and celebrating the home town of each of the visiting Town Criers.

Entries have already been confirmed from Town Criers from across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria – some of whom will continue their travels after the championships to compete internationally.

As well as securing generous sponsorship from Evolution Mining, Council has also partnered with the West Wyalong Show Society to host the official day of competition on Wednesday 6 September.

A large temporary stage will be erected at the Showground for the purpose of the competition - which will be a showpiece attraction for patrons on West Wyalong Show Day.

A guest panel of judges will assess the Town Criers across a number of categories including diction and inflection, bearing and confidence, sustained volume and clarity, accuracy and content as well as best dressed and best scroll.

Each of the Town Criers will deliver two cries – one about their home town and the other a story they have penned about the history, hospitality and “Hearts of Gold” of the Bland Shire.

Competitors will arrive in West Wyalong on Monday 4 September before convening at the Bland Shire Council Chambers the following morning for the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers annual general meeting and a Mayoral reception with Bland Shire Mayor, Tony Lord later that evening.

The group will visit the Cowal gold mine on the afternoon of Tuesday 5 September where Evolution staff will assist with two unique activities to determine the order of competition the following day.

Evolution and Council will again join forces to host a community event on the morning of Wednesday 6 September while the formal festivities will wind up with a dinner and awards presentation held at the historic Wyalong Hall during the evening.

Council has arranged a series of further activities, including various local tours, for Thursday 7 September before competitors gradually make their way home or, in some cases, overseas for the next competition.

The Town Crier championships were held in Redlands, Queensland last year where Bland Shire Crier Mr Sturgess was able to lodge a successful bid to bring the event to West Wyalong for the first time in 2017.
