Town Crier Championships winner and results

City of Sydney Town Crier Graham Keating was crowned Australian champion for a record 17th time at the recent Australian Town Crier Championships held in West Wyalong.

An emotional Mr Keating was presented with the prestigious champion of champions title by Bland Shire Mayor, Tony Lord at a gala dinner at the Wyalong Hall hosted by Bland Shire Town Crier Kyle Sturgess.

The competition was contested by 15 Town Criers representing Councils and communities from across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand.

Mr Keating’s crowning was the culmination of two days of organised activities for competitors and their companions which included a visit to the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre and Cowal gold mine, a Mayoral reception, a community barbecue and the official competition held in challenging weather conditions at the West Wyalong Show.

One of the highlights for the competitors was the visit to the Cowal gold mine where Evolution Mining, the major sponsor of the event, held challenges to determine the order of competition for the following day.

With mixed results, each of the Criers tried their hand at a truck simulator and gold panning in an experience none will soon forget.

The competitors delighted crowds at the West Wyalong Show with their style, personality and the well penned cries about both their home towns and West Wyalong.

West Wyalong’s famous hospitality continued into the evening at the official dinner at the historic Wyalong Hall where Mr Keating’s announcement as champion was another highlight along with Central Coast Town Crier Stephen Clarke’s crowning as the People’s Choice winner.

Mr Keating began Town Crying in 1975 at Old Sydney Town, a Colonial Theme Park on the Central Coast, New South Wales, where he was Entertainment Manager until 1984.

In 1986 he was appointed The Official Town Crier for The City of Sydney, a position which he still holds.  He has won the World Championship of Town Criers five times, the Halifax International Challenge, Nova Scotia, four times, and now the Australian National Title 17 times

Many of the Town Criers stayed in the Bland Shire for several days following the championships with Bland Shire Council arranging a series of tours and visits to local landmarks whilst local community groups gathered in the library the day after the championships to meet with the Criers and their families and showcase the wonderful talent and spirit of the Bland Shire community.
