West Wyalong Pound and Ranger Information
This section contains useful information on services provided by the West Wyalong Pound and the Ranger.
Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998, all dogs and cats which are born or who change owners after the 1 July 1999 will need to be microchipped and registered. The exemption being, if you already owned your cat at this date it is not compulsory.
- Animals are to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age Lifetime Registration by the time the animal is six months of age.
- Microchipping is carried out by a vet or any authorised implanter, and is painless. It is about the size of a grain of rice and is usually placed between the shoulders – it is similar to them receiving immunisation injections.
- Microchipping enables vets and other animal workers to reunite pets with their owners. There is a bar code on the microchip that is implanted by your vet that will have all of the information you supplied at the time.
NOTE: for this reason it is very important that should your details change at any time, you contact your local council and advise them so amendments can be made to your pets' details.
Lifetime Registration Lifetime Registration takes place after you have your dog microchipped and it is paid at our local Council. As the name suggests, this is a "one off" payment unlike the old annual tag system previous to 1999.
Registration makes sure your pet is provided with all the protection and regulation that the Companion Animals Act and Council can provide. The Act provides Council with a range of powers and responsibilities to ensure companion animals and their owners coexist with other members of the community who chose not to own cats or dogs.
You will need to have the animal microchipped PRIOR to registration and bring with you any necessary documentation such as microchip details, sterilisation certificate, breeder's card or pension card. Please note that microchipping is not registration.

* Enable pet owners intending to have their cat or dog desexed to access the discounted registration fee. The pet must be desexed and the Pet Registry updated before the pet reaches 6 months of age. If desexing does not occur, then the additional fee applies. Where the pet is not desexed or the additional fee not paid, the registration is cancelled and penalties may apply.
** An eligible pensioner includes a person in receipt of the aged pension, war widow pension or disability pension. If you are unsure whether you are an eligible pensioner, please contact your local council.
NOTE: Exemptions exist for trained assistance animals such as seeing eye or hearing dogs and farm working dogs. Greyhounds which are registered with the Greyhound Control Board are covered by separate registration for this period.

To arrange the release of your animal from the West Wyalong Pound you will need to make an appointment with a Ranger on 6972 2266. Please note that all impounded animals must be microchipped and registered before being released from the pound. You will need to provide suitable personal identification such as a driver's licence, and any other appropriate documentation for your animal eg sterilisation certificate, microchipping form.
Council endeavours to rehouse suitable unwanted cats and dogs from the West Wyalong Pound. Any person wishing to adopt an animal from the pound should contact Council's Rangers on 6972 2266 to make an appointment for an adoption consultation. http://www.petrescue.com.au/
If you find you are unable to continue to care for your cat or dog you should make all attempts to rehouse the animal. Council's Rangers can direct you towards assistance.
Any person wishing to register a cat or dog can do so at Council's Offices at 2-6 Shire Street, West Wyalong between 8.30am and 4.30pm weekdays. You will need to bring the necessary documentation such as microchip details, sterilization certificate, breeder's card or pension card.
Council's Rangers work between 8.30am and 4.30pm weekdays. Rangers do not pick up stray dogs after hours. Stray dogs may be deposited in the deposit pen located at the West Wyalong Pound. In the event of an emergency outside these working hours, contact Council's After Hours Duty Officer on 0418 402 350.
Council's Rangers handle complaints regarding the following animal issues:
- Dogs in prohibited areas eg school grounds, children's playgrounds, food preparation areas
Complaints must be telephoned through to Council's Customer Service Officers on 6972 2266 so they are immediately registered on Council's complaint system and forwarded to the relevant officer for action.
Rangers undertake regular patrols of West Wyalong, Wyalong and surrounding villages to monitor animal management issues.
Council's Rangers are available to undertake education presentations in relation to companion animals for school and community groups upon request. Arrangements for presentations need to be made by contacting the Manager Community Services on 6972 2266 during business hours.
