Nominations open for Australia Day awards

Bland Shire Council is inviting nominations for the 2016 Australian Day awards.

Nominations are now open across all six categories, including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year, Community Event of the Year, Achievement in Sport and Contribution to Sport with forms available online at or at Council’s Shire Street offices.

The awards recognise individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during 2015 and/or have given an outstanding service over a number of years to the Bland Shire community over and above normal employment duties.

Bland Shire Council Acting General Manager, Adele Casey, is encouraging people to take to time out to consider nominating a friend, family member, colleague or someone they admire from afar for an Australia Day award.

“The Australia Day awards provide a great opportunity for the community to say thank you to those quiet achievers, humble and hard working individuals and community groups for their efforts and dedication,” Mrs Casey said.

“It is also an opportunity to give a collective community pat on the back to the local athletes who have represented the Bland Shire with pride and distinction throughout the year.

“I would encourage everyone to take a moment to think about the hard working and high achieving members of their community or sporting group and consider nominating them for an Australia Day award.”

Submitting a nomination is simpler than ever with a single page, double sided nomination form. To be eligible nominees must be an Australian Citizen who resides in the Bland Shire or a locally based community organisation which has a demonstrated record of significant achievement in the local community.

Individuals and groups are ineligible if they have already won an award in the same category, are an elected representative (eg Councillor) or a recipient of Australian and Imperial Honours. Individuals, clubs, associations and organisations cannot nominate themselves.

The Australia Day awards will be presented at the Lions Club Australia Day breakfast in McCann Park on Tuesday 26 January. Anyone wanting to know more about the

Australia Day awards or breakfast is asked to contact Council’s Community Relations Officer, Craig Sutton.
