1. Overview

West Wyalong Pound and Ranger Information

This section contains useful information on services provided by the West Wyalong Pound and the Ranger.

2.  Microchipping & Lifetime Registration

Under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998, all dogs and cats which are born or who change owners after July 1 1999 will need to be microchipped and registered.

3. Microchipping

  • Animals are to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age Lifetime Registration by the time the animal is six months of age.
  • Microchipping is carried out by a vet or any authorised implanter, and is painless. It is about the size of a grain of rice and is usually placed between the shoulders – it is similar to them receiving immunisation injections.
  • Microchipping enables vets and other animal workers to reunite pets with their owners. There is a bar code on the microchip that is implanted by your vet that will have all of the information you supplied at the time.

NOTE: for this reason it is very important that should your details change at any time, you contact your local council and advise them so amendments can be made to your pets' details.

Lifetime Registration Lifetime Registration takes place after you have your dog microchipped and it is paid at our local Council. As the name suggests, this is a "one off" payment unlike the old annual tag system previous to 1999.

Registration makes sure your pet is provided with all the protection and regulation that the Companion Animals Act and Council can provide. The Act provides Council with a range of powers and responsibilities to ensure companion animals and their owners coexist with other members of the community who chose not to own cats or dogs.

You will need to have the animal microchipped PRIOR to registration and bring with you any necessary documentation such as microchip details, sterilisation certificate, breeder's card or pension card. Please note that microchipping is not registration.

4. Registration

Any person wishing to register a cat or dog can do so at Council's Offices at 2-6 Shire Street, West Wyalong between 8.30am and 5pm weekdays. You will need to bring the necessary documentation such as microchip details, sterilisation certificate, breeder's card or pension card.

5. Fees

Up to date fees for Companion Animal Registration can be found on the NSW Office of Local Government website

All fees usually increase every financial year and are subject to change depending on the NSW Companion Animal rates.

7. Impounded Animals

To arrange the release of your animal from the West Wyalong Pound you will need to make an appointment with a Ranger on 6972 2266. Please note that all impounded animals must be microchipped and registered before being released from the pound. You will need to provide suitable personal identification such as a driver's licence, and any other appropriate documentation for your animal eg sterilisation certificate, microchipping form.

8. Adoption and Rehousing

Council endeavours to rehouse suitable unwanted cats and dogs from the West Wyalong Pound. Any person wishing to adopt an animal from the pound should contact Council's Rangers on 6972 2266 to make an appointment for an adoption consultation. http://www.petrescue.com.au/

9. Surrender

If you find you are unable to continue to care for your cat or dog you should make all attempts to rehouse the animal. Council's Rangers can direct you towards assistance.

10. After hours

Councils Ranger service is available between 8:00am-4:00pm weekdays. Councils Ranger is on call weekdays only.

For incidents such as stock on the road, dog attacks, and aggressive roaming dogs on the weekends, local police authorities may be able to assist, however, Council understands their resourcing and the constraints police face in managing these matters.

The Pound is closed on weekends to the public, with services limited to essential cleaning and animal welfare checks. Drop boxes for animal surrenders will be closed to assist with the welfare of surrendered animals. Recent incidents in surrounding councils highlight the importance of ensuring animals are not left in overnight cages to prevent tragedy due to extreme weather conditions and the introduction of the Parvo Virus from animals that have been left at the pound without staff being advised.

Safe surrenders can still be arranged during weekdays by appointment. This ensures that critical information about surrendered animals, including reasons for surrender and temperament assessments, is documented to support safe rehoming.

11. Complaints

Council's Rangers handle complaints regarding the following animal issues:

  • Roaming and stray dogs
  • Dogs off leash
  • Barking dogs
  • Dogs in prohibited areas eg school grounds, children's playgrounds, food preparation areas
  • Nuisance dogs and cats
  • Dog attacks
  • Stock on roads

Complaints must be telephoned through to Council's Customer Service Officers on 6972 2266 during work hours so they are immediately registered on Council's complaint system and forwarded to the relevant officer for action.

12. Patrols

Rangers undertake regular patrols of West Wyalong, Wyalong and surrounding villages to monitor animal management issues.

13. Education

Council's Rangers are available to undertake education presentations in relation to companion animals for school and community groups upon request. Arrangements for presentations need to be made by contacting the Manager Community Services on 6972 2266 during business hours.
